Spanish......where to find them?

Every time we start to go fishing, The Warden asks if we are going to go hunt spanish macks. The answer is always the same....."if we see birds." Well.....most times, we don't see birds.

So how and where can I expect to fairly reliably find spanish macks. I've seen birds diving in the harbor...only caught blues. I've seen birds and bait busting outside the jetties, never got a bite. I've seen birds and bait at 4KI and did catch a few.

Do I need to troll off the beaches? How far, do I need a planer? Basically, when you set off to catch Spanish....how to you do it?

Thanks.

We like to run and gun for them a few miles outside the jetties. Come out the jetties and pick a direction, as you said, start looking for birds or fish busting on the surface. Those are your spanish. You can troll small clark spoons in front of a trolling weight or small planer but what's really fun is trying to get in front of the school and casting small gotchas or lead jigs to the fish. But be warned, depending on the size of your boat, it can get a little dangerous with kids or inexperienced casters throwing treble hooks around.

Thanks Bone and Optiker. Do you know if the spanish are off the beach even if you don't see 'em. My boat is a 22 GW.....still, I don't like getting beat up in swells. I'm a Mr. Blue Bird kind of guy.

I'm sure you could troll around and find them. Get out to about 30-40 feet of water and put out your spread. If they're around, you'll know. But usually they'll give away their position pushing the glass minnows to the surface and the birds on top. A 22 GW would be fine if it's not choppy.

Went to same rip in Broad River Sunday and today. Schooling in the same place. Caught about 40 just casting to them. Blues mixed in as well.

Fun stuff!

I'm assuming you are fishing Charleston.....

Our struggle continues....couldn't find them Saturday or Sunday....even trolled toward the Nearshore. No birds, no bait on the surface...

We'll try again. bigsmile
